This cutlery is based on a curve generalised by the 18th century mathematician Gabriel Lamé. When the index 'n' is greater than 2, the curve can be viewed as the geometric average of a rectangle and an ellipse. A particular manifestation of this curve was described by the Danish poet Piet Hein as a ‘superellipse’.
Lamé curves run throughout the cutlery to create a design which is visually balanced: from the spoon bowl and knife blade, to the fork head, the tines and the knife handle. The project was initiated in 2008 and evolved through drawings and prototypes over the next few years.
